Rain has finally made it to our corner of the world! 🌧️
If you’ve been to the farm recently, you would have noticed that the pond - normally as deep as 2 meters in parts, has been reduced to a puddle - an all-time low. The ducks float about in those sad 10 square meters, eagerly awaiting rain - which is now here at last! If I were a duck, I would be out there celebrating! Yippee!
Along with the rain, the temperature is dropping, meaning that the farm is approaching the end of its tour season.
As we move into late fall, we wanted to highlight ongoing farm programming, extend a special thank you, announce the start of our fall volunteering season, join us in celebrating a local non-profit's 80th milestone, and provide an update about grazing initiatives.

Last weekend to visit the farm! 🐑
The farm will close at the end of October, with its final day being on October 31st - Halloween!
The last guided visits will take place on Saturday and Sunday, October 25 and 26, at 10 AM, 11:30 AM and at 4:30 PM on Sunday for the Halloween experience (exceptionally no Halloween visit this Saturday due to a family event). Each visits lasts an hour, and food for the animals is included.
If you haven’t had your animal dose this fall yet, this is your last chance!

Welcoming volunteers with special needs 🫶
Over the summer, the farm has had the pleasure of welcoming teens and young adults with intellectual disabilities, on the autism spectrum, and with polyhandicap from Horizon High School, Summit School, and CROM/CIUSSS.
The volunteers took part in a variety of activities — from assisting PACE staff during the morning farming routine, lending a hand during farm tours, to contributing to longer-term projects like taking apart old structures and building our water filtration system.
Through these experiences, the young folks built collaboration skills, strengthened their autonomy, and (we hope) felt valued and proud of their work.
It’s been meaningful for us to collaborate with these organisations over the years and to witness the positive impact on our helpers. We are truly grateful for their presence and contribution! 🌿💚
Volunteering season is here! 🧤
November is our bi-annual volunteering month. That’s when we prepare the farm for the winter season by moving summer items into their storage sheds, placing tarps over some barns and removing them from the platform, cleaning out the barns, and doing various maintenance work all around the farm.
If you or your teens would like to get involved, please let us know by replying to this email.
⚠️ Please note that physical strength is required. This is not the time for a leisurely farm visit.
Volunteer days are either Saturdays or Sundays, weather-dependent. We decide a few days before each event, depending on the forecast.
Volunteers should bring a water bottle, gardening gloves and be dressed for the weather. Any extra tools, such as shovels, spades, pitch forks, and rakes, are appreciated!
Grazing at the Cooper Marsh Conservation Area 🌾
We partnered with Amitonte, our sister non-profit that offers animal grazing services, to bring our herd of 9 goats to Cooper Marsh, an absolutely stunning conservation area nestled on the St Lawrence near South Lancaster, Ontario.
The culprit: invasive phragmites that spread across much of the wetland, crowding out native plants, driving away nesting birds, and disrupting the marsh’s natural water flow. Over the course of 15 non-consecutive grazing days, the goats have cleared a densely vegetated area of roughly 7,500 square feet.
We hope to be able to repeat this project earlier next season to cover a wider area and target the phragmites before they become incredibly dense.

Grazing initiatives at the Morgan Arobretum 🐐
On October 26, the Morgan Arboretum will be celebrating their 80th (!) anniversary. Rumour has it that there will be sausages, apple cider, music, guided tours, a scavenger hunt, arts and crafts, and lectures in maple syrup, tree identification and birdwatching. What a party! The event will run from 11 AM to 5 PM and the cost of entrance to the Morgan still applies (see their rates here).
As part of the celebration, we are teaming up with Amitonte, our sister non-profit offering natural land management by animals, to bring goats as a demonstration of their grazing capabilities for invasive species control (note: this will be offered from 11 AM to 3 PM).

Christmas is still a ways to go, but we are booking winter events on our mobile farm calendar already.

Melanie Couture
Mélanie, or Mel as everyone at the farm calls her, has been with us since March 2024 as a mobile farmer. Since then, she’s also been involved with the grazing projects at Cap-Saint-Jacques and Cooper Marsh.
Since childhood, Mel has always dreamed of working with animals. She once wanted to become a veterinarian and spent countless hours reading about animals or watching nature documentaries.
She also likes to take care of injured and abandoned animals, and has recently been working on winterising a coop for a pet Muscovy duck.
At the farm, Mel is known for her strength, patience, positivity and gentle nature. She leads Mobile Farm events with confidence and care, effortlessly connecting with children and animals alike. She’s also a total pro at reverse and parallel parking the trailer into any kind of spot (often the trickiest part of mobile events!).
Outside of the farm, Mel’s other great passion is music. She plays an impressive number of instruments — drums, guitar, bass, piano, ukulele, saxophone, flute, marimba, and timpani.
Mel brings a wonderful caring spirit to the team — and plenty of extra hugs for all the animals.

La pluie est enfin arrivée dans notre coin du monde! 🌧️
Si vous êtes passé·e à la ferme récemment, vous avez sûrement remarqué que l’étang — qui atteint normalement jusqu’à deux mètres de profondeur par endroits — s’est transformé en une simple flaque d’eau, son niveau le plus bas qu'on n'ait jamais vu. Les canards y flottent tant bien que mal sur leurs dix mètres carrés, attendant la pluie avec impatience… qui est enfin arrivée! Si j’étais un canard, je serais dehors en train de fêter ça! Youpi!
Avec la pluie vient aussi la baisse des températures, ce qui signifie que la saison des visites guidées tire à sa fin.
Alors que nous entrons la fin de cette saison absolument magnifique, nous souhaitons mettre en lumière les activités en cours à la ferme, adresser un remerciement tout spécial, annoncer le début de notre saison de bénévolat, célébrer le 80e anniversaire d’un organisme local, et partager une mise à jour sur nos projets de pâturage.

Les dernières visites guidées (😢) auront lieu le samedi et dimanche 25 et 26 octobre à 10 h et 11 h 30, et à 16 h 30 pour l’expérience d’Halloween (*pas de visite d'Halloween le 25 exceptionnellement). Chaque visite dure une heure et inclut la nourriture pour les animaux.

Accueillir des bénévoles ayant des besoins particuliers 🫶
Cet été, la ferme a eu le plaisir d’accueillir des ados et de jeunes adultes vivant avec une déficience intellectuelle, un trouble du spectre de l’autisme et des polyhandicap, provenant de l’école Horizon, de l’école Summit et du CROM/CIUSSS.
Les bénévoles ont participé à une variété d’activités — de l’aide à la routine matinale des fermiers, à l’appui lors des visites guidées, aux projets à plus long terme comme le démontage de vieilles structures ou la construction de notre système de filtration d’eau.
Grâce à ces expériences, les jeunes ont pu développer leurs habiletés de collaboration, renforcer leur autonomie et (on l’espère!) se sentir valorisé.e.s et fier.ère.s de leur contribution.
Collaborer avec ces organismes au fil des ans a été très significatif pour nous, et nous sommes profondément reconnaissants de la présence et de l'aide des jeunes ! 🌿💚
La saison du bénévolat commence bientôt ! 🧤
Novembre est un de nos deux mois de bénévolat (l'autre est au printemps, en avril).
C’est à ce moment qu’on prépare la ferme pour l’hiver : on range les structures estivales, on couvre certaines granges et enlève la bâche de la platforme, on nettoie les granges, et on effectue divers travaux d’entretien.
Si vous (ou vos ados) souhaitez vous impliquer, répondez simplement à ce courriel.
⚠️ Notez que de la force physique est requise — ce n’est pas le moment pour une visite de la ferme !
Les journées de bénévolat se tiennent les samedis ou dimanches, selon la météo. On confirme quelques jours à l’avance selon les prévisions.
On suggère d'apporter une bouteille d’eau, des gants de jardinage et s’habiller selon la température. Si vous pourriez apporter vos outils - pelles, bêches, fourche, râteaux, etc. - ça serait apprécié !
Pâturage à la Réserve naturelle de Cooper Marsh 🌾
En partenariat avec Amitonte, un organisme spécialisé dans le pâturage écologique, nous avons amené notre troupeau de 9 chèvres à Cooper Marsh, une superbe réserve naturelle située sur le Saint-Laurent, près de South Lancaster, en Ontario.
Le coupable : le roseau commun, qui s'est répandu sur une grande partie du marais, étouffant la végétation indigène, chassant les oiseaux nicheurs et perturbant l’écoulement naturel de l’eau.
En 15 journées de pâturage (non consécutives), les chèvres ont réussi à dégager une zone dense d’environ 700 mètres carrés.
Nous espérons pouvoir répéter le projet plus tôt la saison prochaine pour couvrir une plus grande superficie avant que cette plante ne devienne trop dense.

Initiatives de pâturage à l’Arboretum Morgan 🐐
Le 26 octobre, l’Arboretum Morgan célèbrera son 80e anniversaire !
Il y aura des saucisses, du cidre de pomme, de la musique, des visites guidées, une chasse au trésor, des activités artistiques et des conférences sur le sirop d’érable, l’identification des arbres et l’observation des oiseaux.
L’événement aura lieu de 11 h à 17 h, et les frais d’entrée habituels à l’Arboretum s’appliquent (voir les tarifs ici).
Dans le cadre de cette célébration, nous collaborons avec Amitonte pour faire une démonstration de pâturage écologique de 11 h à 15 h — une belle occasion de voir comment les chèvres peuvent contribuer à la gestion naturelle des plantes envahissantes.

À la recherche de marchés des Fêtes 👀
Noël est encore loin, mais nous commençons déjà à planifier notre calendrier d’événements hivernaux pour la ferme mobile.
